Disabled Surfers Association,
DSA, held their great event at Collaroy today!
Across all my surfing there are
few things that have evoked such a strong positive
response and buzz than being amongst Surfers who are
helping those who are severely less advantaged than
themselves.

It's all about Surfers getting hands-on helping
those who would never otherwise have had the
opportunity to experience the wonder of the waves!
World Champ Barton Lynch first
turned me onto the event several years ago and I owe
him much thanks. Whenever in town he would
participate and bring his team of up-and-coming
young surfers along, like the Salisburies and Elle
Black, to have the chance to give something back to
the community in this way.
Barton is a DSA Patron along with
Tom Carroll and Taj Burrow. Good on you!

For many of the Disabled, just
getting wet is hugely exciting.
Then the surfboard races in the
pool offer another level of thrill.
TToday the finale was making it
across the hot sand to wait under the tents for the
turn to be loaded onto a surfboard, taken out into
the surf, then set free on the small waves that
racing in to the sand.

You have to see the looks on the
participants faces. Hear the cheers and screams of
fun. You can feel something, of man helping one
another, humans at their best!
It's a well
organised event and good organisation is needed to
make it possible for the Disabled to make it into
the surf. It takes special wheel chairs, ramps and
platforms, and much hands on help.

Volunteers
provide much of that help following a colour coded
structure. Volunteers in blue rashies, under the
guidance of Team Leaders in red, who get direction
from the Marshalls, in green. Yellow rashies? There
for the people there to have all the fun!
Many
thanks to Mark Kelly and his Global Surf Industries
who are major sponsors, and Warringah Council who
have provided support with their great trailer and
display unit and access to the beach and pool.
